All cycling routes in Appenzell

The typical gabled houses in the market town of Appenzell are as colourful as the national costume, the cheese is spicy, Biber- and Kuhfladen, a local delicacy, brown and sweet, the Ruppenpass uneven and steep and views of the Säntis and Rheintal unequalled.

«Hohe Hirschberg» is center point of this tour - offering stupendous views after a non-too strenuous climb. From here, sweeping views extend from the gentle rolling hills to the Rheintal valley, where a variety of cultural offers await you following a long descent.

A circular route through the green hills of the Appenzell region, on the sunny balcony above the Bodensee with typical farmhouses and strong-willed, likeable local people. Far from daily hustle and bustle but never far from a tavern.

The scenic Appenzell route leads from Heiden through the hilly Appenzell landscapes to the Gallus town of St. Gallen – passing known and lesser known points of interest on the way.

Shingle-clad farm buildings scattered in a green, strongly contoured pre-Alpine landscape, a tough pedal over crests and through deep gullies, up on Chellenmoor a dragonfly buzzes over high moorland, the Churfirsten in Toggenburg greet from a distance.

The Appenzell region is one of the most unspoilt areas in Switzerland and its charm is difficult to match. It is rare to experience this region more thoroughly than on the second stage of the Panorama Bike route between Trogen and Appenzell.

Toggenburg more forested and rugged, a land of nooks and crannies where water once provided work and death. Below the alluvial Linth plain, «Ziegerland» with mighty limestone cliffs, Glarus once a textile region of international importance.

This 43-kilometer stretch leads from Herisau to Altstätten as you get to see more and more of the attractive Appenzellerland and Alpstein scenery.

On the third stage of the Panorama Bike route, there are high mountain passes to conquer for the first time – Schwägalp and Risipass to name just two.
